Picturing online gaming's value

For some time, online
gamers have been treating
their virtual lives as just
another part of their offline
lives.

Millions around the world play,
meet up, battle, buy and sell
in online games and virtual
worlds, such as Second Life
and World of Warcraft.

But to many, these virtual
goings-on can be a total
mystery.

Armed with his lens, photo
journalist Robbie Cooper has
been facing up to gamers,
revealing their intricate lives
and identities to the rest of
the world.

Last year, his Alter Egos exhibition in London showed off the people
behind the avatars - their virtual representations. It
was a fascinating and comforting peek into the very ordinary
and familiar faces of gamers and virtual worlders.

This year, he has cast his lens further afield into China and
Korea to get the stories behind the avatars.

"I wanted to build on what I had done before and get more
cultural variety and more personal variety," he told the BBC
News website.

Part of life

"I wanted to see people who use female avatars, women who
use male avatars, and also people who earn their living from
doing this - from buying and selling virtual goods, or creating
to operate people's characters."

One player he met in the virtual world, Second Life, earns
$70,000 a year creating female avatar clothing, he says.

Another player, Mark (aka Marcos Fonzarelli in Second Life)
has turned himself into a "robot tailor", designing robot
costumes that characters can wear. Admittedly, it is a niche
market, says Mark, but he still earns $250 a month.

Pictures: Gamers unmasked
The only resource is his time'
'which people pay; there are 60,000 members who
could potentially pay.

According to the robot tailor,
the real money is in the female
clothing market. Mr Cooper
says that makes sense when
one considers the hugely
lucrative beauty and
market in the physical world.

It seems natural that the same kinds of rules and practices
that occur in physical life will happen in virtual worlds too.
That became evident when residents were urged to
donate to the Katrina Hurricane aid effort, via the game. A virtual
memorial with candles was even created.

"We live in a virtual world anyway," says Mr Cooper.
"Democracy is virtual, politics is virtual; all this stuff and
information we get in the newspaper - a lot of it is public
relations stuff."

When virtual turns real

But Mr Cooper's pictures show that those boundaries between
the virtual and the "real" are blurring in other parts of the
world, particularly in Asia.

The photos captured the fascinating and largely unseen world
of workers in China and Korea who earn their keep by looking
after people's characters in games while they are at work, or
asleep.

"A commodity is a commodity. If it is worth
something, people are going
to work hard to make the
money. In China, there is
matter of fact attitude about
it"(Robbie Cooper)
Qing Xu Wei, for example
used to make 10,000 yuan
(£692) a month by power-
levelling other people's game
characters while they are
away from the game.

The programs he creates runs
on seven computers, each
churning out power points so that gamers can get their
characters up to a certain strength and status.

"From their point of view it is understandable. When a new
game comes out, do you want to start at the bottom or have
someone do that for you to get to level at which it is fun to
play?" he explains.

One shot shows what, at first glance, might be mistaken for a
virtual room from within a game. With newspapers as
wallpaper, posters of fantasy figures, and scruffy bedding, it
is in fact a room in a net cafe in Tianjin, China.

It is used by employees who work for a dollar a day levelling
up player's characters. Up to 30 will work for 16 hours, using
the room to sleep in shifts.

Dark economics?

To Chinese gamers, it does not seem unusual that there
would be people working on every level of the economic food
chain, says Mr Cooper.

The gamers there, he added, had reams of stories about in-
game cheating and stolen accounts.

Buying and selling gaming items such as imaginary weapons is
a booming business on the web. The internet games section
of Ebay saw more than $9m (£5m) in trades in 2003 alone.

"A commodity is a commodity. If it is worth something, people
are going to work hard to make the money. In China, there is
matter of fact attitude about it," he says.

Earlier this year, a Shanghai
online gamer was given a
suspended death sentence for
killing a fellow gamer when he
found out the friend had sold
his virtual sword, which he had lent him, for 7,200
(£473).

This kind of criminal activity
which happens as a result
events occurring in a game
could become more common.

China has no laws to deal with the theft of virtual property.
in South Korea, where gaming is treated as a mainstream
, there is a police unit that investigates in-game crime

According to Mr Cooper, this shows how seriously gaming is
taken, especially when real-life money and value plays
part

"A lot of people I met did not have as much sentiment about
the games as they do in the West. In China you do what you
to do to get by," he explains.

But there is more to "value" in game playing than just
economics, says Mr Cooper.

"This whole thing is about value and if people are willing to
pay money for something, it has some kind of value to them.
Value is more than money; it is emotional value, time, and
work."

When gamers find emotional value and a sense of
accomplishment through online games and virtual worlds, that
can sometimes be just as worthy.

Mr Cooper's most recent photos will be on show at a
PlayStation 2 supported exhibition tour starting 9 November in
Amsterdam.

Global warming

Global warming is the increase in the average measured temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceance since the mid-20th century, and its projected continuation.
Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during the 100 years ending in 2005.

[1][2] The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that most of the increase since the mid-twentieth century is "very likely" due to the increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations.

[3][2] Natural phenomena such as solar variation combined with volcanoes probably had a small warming effect from pre-industrial times to 1950 and a small cooling effect from 1950 onward.[4][5] These basic conclusions have been endorsed by at least 30 scientific societies and academies of science,

[6] including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries.

[7][8][9] While individual scientists have voiced disagreement with these findings,[10] the overwhelming majority of scientists working on climate change agree with the IPCC's main conclusions.

[11][12]
Climate model projections summarized by the IPCC indicate that average global surface temperature will likely rise a further 1.1 to 6.4 °C (2.0 to 11.5 °F) during the twenty-first century.

[3] This range of values results from differing estimates of future greenhouse gas emissions and from the use of models with differing climate sensitivity. Although most studies focus on the period up to 2100, warming and sea level rise are expected to continue for more than a thousand years even if greenhouse gas levels are stabilized. This results from the large heat capacity of the oceans.[3]
Increasing global temperature is expected to cause sea levels to rise, an increase in the intensity of extreme weather events, and significant changes to the amount and pattern of precipitation, likely including an expanse of the subtropical desert regions.[13]. Other expected effects of global warming include changes in agricultural yields, modifications of trade routes, glacier retreat, mass species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease vectors.
Remaining scientific uncertainties include the amount of warming expected in the future, and how warming and related changes will vary from region to region around the globe. Most national governments have signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Political and public debate continues regarding what, if any, action should be taken to reduce or reverse future warming or to adapt to its expected consequences

Endeavour readied for Friday undocking - Thanksgiving on ISS for STS-126 November 27th, 2008 by Chris Bergin With Flight Day 14 marking the STS-126 crew’s final day onboard the International Space Station (ISS), the performance of Endeavour during her docked mission has been almost issue-free mission, which has allowed the Mission Management Team (MMT) to focus their attentions on other elements of the mission. ids.push(8071);
Endeavour is being put through the final requirements ahead of undocking, receiving the “Leonardo” Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) back into her payload bay, which followed a water dump and a Fuel Cell purge.
“The Orbiter took control of the mated stack at 330/16:11:02 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) [10/15:15:23 Mission Elapsed Time (MET)] and the 17 degree maneuver to water dump attitude began at 330/16:11:31 GMT (10/15:15:52 MET),” noted MMT status on L2. “The 17 degree maneuver back to the Torque Equilibrium Attitude (TEA) began at 330/17:04:30 GMT (10/16:08:51 MET) and the ISS assumed control of the mated stack at 330/18:16:00 GMT (10/17:20:21 MET).
The Orbiter was in attitude control for approximately 2 hours, 15 minutes. “The third on-orbit fuel cell purge began at 330/02:06 GMT (10/01:10 MET). During the 120-hour purge interval the approximate voltage decay was 0.13 Vdc for fuel cell 1, 0.12 Vdc for fuel cell 2, and 0.12 Vdc for fuel cell 3.”
Endeavour was also involved in a DTO (Detailed Test Objective) on orbit, relating to a heater modification on the Main Landing Gear (MLG). The results have proven to be positive. “Results from the MLG tire thermal conditioning test using the MLG brake line heaters B and C were presented to the Mission Management team,” noted the MMT status.
“Based upon existing data, the conclusion is that tire temperature response to the operation of the heaters is significant enough to recommend use on upcoming flights when needed.”
A total of 18 MER (Mission Evaluation Room) problems have been listed for this mission - which is extremely low - all of which will be listed in a post flight review article. On Station, one of the critical elements of hardware that was delivered by Endeavour - the Urine Processing Assembly (UPA) - appears to be working as advertised, following on orbit modifications. “Previously shutdown due to centrifuge speed and high motor current.
Installed 2 additional hard-mount fasteners on FD11, checkout post-IFM delayed due to MTL hose not fully seated,” noted an MMT presentation. “First run: UPA successfully operated for 5 hrs w/nominal shutdown. 3.5 hours into the run, crew reported “washing machine’” sound with current increase and motor speed decrease. Event cleared after 30 sec “Second run: Successfully operated for 4 hr 15 min w/supply tank depletion. Third run: Start-up delayed by a reoccurrence of previously noted check valve failure indication - suspect sticky valve, subsequent start-up nominal.”
LIVE UPDATES L2 STS-126 MMT Level Coverage Click here to Join L2 As a result, the assembly did not require returning to the MPLM for troubleshooting back on Earth, although managers held open the option to take return it via placement in the middeck, so as not to delay Wednesday’s re-berthing of the MPLM. “The MMT reviewed the MPLM return option for the UPA and the ISSP reported that they did not require this option to be worked further based on the current status of the UPA,” noted the first MMT status.
“The MMT agreed to continue to review and support development of the option to return the UPA distillate assembly via the Shuttle A/L (Airlock) or middeck with the decision on that option to be at the next MMT.
“Again, based on current status this is considered unlikely to be implemented and there are technical challenges on stowage orientation that are still being worked for this contingency.” However, later on Wednesday, confidence in the system allowed for the final decision - to leave the assembly on the ISS - to be taken. “The ISS Urine Processing Assembly (UPA) is functioning adequately, and will remain on the ISS.
The Middeck/Airlock stowage analysis effort was discontinued.” STS-126’s crew carried out four EVAs during the docked phase of the mission, highlighted by work conducted on the Station’s Solar Alpha Rotary Joints (SARJs) - which has proved to be successful, according to initial results (follow up will be provided for the undocking article).
The only issue that the MMT have looked into via the EVAs related to increased levels of CO2 - still well within safety limits - inside spacewalker Shane Kimbrough’s EMU suit, which will become part of the mission’s post flight IFA (In Flight Anomaly) review.
“One action was assigned for post-flight to review how EVA training and met(abolic) rate expectations can be more formally understood for the on console team’s management of the EVAs and resource determination (LiOH vs METOX, etc). “Several points during the EVA had the crew take a break and levels reduced. Managed METOX usage to have crew back in airlock by 6 hrs PET.
Officially called for ‘Terminate EVA’ due to a CO2 peak during ingress (resulted in no formal change to ops). Will work this action and report back to a joint program forum.” The MMT also continued to evaluate the Micrometeoroid Orbital Debris (MMOD) strike to Endeavour’s window 6, which continues to be classed as safe to re-enter with.
The discussions on Wednesday related to potential fragment paths, should the thermal pane crack during high pressure loading of the latter stages of re-entry (presentations on L2). As the docked stage of the mission coming to a close, the STS-126 crew and the ISS crew will share a Thanksgiving meal prior closing the hatches between the two vehicles on Thursday, ahead of Friday’s undocking - which places Endeavour on track for a Sunday landing.

Distance learning

1. Feasibility.

Before enrolling your teen in an online school, ask yourself: “Will this be a workable situation for our family?” Realize that distance learning means your child will be at home during the day. Having a stay-at-home parent can be a great asset, especially if your teen needs supervision. Many parents enroll their teenagers in an independent study program due to poor behavior, only to find that the behavior is much worse when the teen has full reign in an unsupervised home. Even if behavior is not an issue, consider your child’s other needs. Generally, distance learning programs are not able to provide the full range of programs that traditional schools offer. If your child needs extra tutoring in Algebra, for example, will you be able to hire someone to help or provide the assistance yourself? Also, don’t underestimate the need for your own involvement in a distance learning program. Parents are often responsible for monitoring their child’s work and participating in regular meetings with teaching supervisors. If you’re already bogged down with responsibilities, helping your teen find success through distance learning may be overwhelming.

2. Motivation.

In order to be successful with a distance learning program, teens need to be independently motivated to do their work. Consider whether or not your teen will be able to stick to his studies without a teacher looking over his shoulder. If a teen is doing poorly in school because he is not motivated to turn in work, chances are that the work won’t get done at home either. Before enrolling your teen, determine if it is reasonable for you to expect him to stay focused on school for several hours a day, without someone to guide him. Some teens are not developmentally ready for such responsibility. If you feel that your teen is up to the challenge, be sure to discuss the option of using a distance learning program with your child. Often teens are more motivated to do the work if the change in schooling is their idea. However, if you have decided that online schooling is best, discuss the reasons with your teen and listen to what he has to say. Work together to set the rules and terms of the arrangement. Teens that feel forced into leaving traditional school or feel that online learning is a punishment often become unmotivated to do their assignments.

3. Socialization.

Socializing with friends is a huge part of high school and an important part of your teen’s development. Before deciding to enroll your child in an online school, take a look at the ways socialization is important to your child, and begin to think of ways that you can meet this need outside of traditional school. If your child relies on sports for a social outlet, look for sporting programs in the community that your teen can be a part of. Allow time for your teen to meet with old friends and make new acquaintances. Clubs, teen programs, and volunteerism can be great ways for your child to socialize. You may also want to consider joining a network of distance learning students and parents. If you are choosing distance learning as a way for your teen to get away from a negative peer group, be prepared to offer replacement activities. Put your teen in situations where he can meet new friends and discover new interests.

Earning Online Incomes
Due to our suffering economy, people are doing everything they can to earn extra money. Americans are losing their jobs, their homes, and even their life savings. They are forced to turn to other means of income such as the internet.

The internet can be a very helpful place, but it can also be a dangerous place. There are various scams and it makes us unsure who to trust.
I was forced to search the internet for extra income when my husband lost his job. He was bringing home $5000.00 per month. We had just purchased a new home; we also had 2 new vehicle payments. We were able to travel and do things with our family.

Life was great! One morning he went into work only to find out his company had been bought out forcing him out of a job. I went into a panic.
what were we going to do? Our mortgage payment was $2000.00 a month alone.

I started to think of ways to make money online. I kept coming across all of these online survey sites, so I decided to research them. My results were scary.

I found that only 3% of the online survey sites offer the material they actually advertise. Scary right? It is very upsetting to know that so many people will scam you out of your hard earned money and never look back.

Only 5% of the online survey sites check their database on a regular basis to make sure all links are working. Also they very rarely make sure all the companies they are advertising for are valid. I don't know about you but that's not enough to convince me that they are a legitimate business.

Some of the online survey systems have what they call the "Premium High Paying Companies". Over 4/5 of the site's I researched require you to pay extra money before you were able to gain access to those "Premium" companies. This is one of the many little things they do not tell you.
Well I had seen enough. I kept searching until I found Kimberly Hoffman's My Online Income Systems. I went to Google for reviews and I could not find one bad review. There were so many pages of great stories and encouraging comments.

My Online Income Systems gives you a 60 day training guide. This guide is a tremendous help. It answers all your questions and gives great guidance. If you are not making money by the time your training is completed then something is wrong and you missed something in the directions.
I was looking for something that would provide me with a steady income and still have freedom to live my life. My Online Income Systems did just that. This system opened a whole new chain of opportunities for me. It just seems like the possibilities are endless.

You get training from the finest instructors that have all been in my shoes. They know what it is like to work hard, 40-50 hours a week just to pay your bills and never get ahead. I would bet that you are the same way. Stuck in the rut of a dead end job.

When I first came across My Online Income Systems I thought I can't afford this; but as I researched it further I found it was only $47.00 to purchase the entire system. No tricks just $47.00. I was so excited I immediately purchased the program and haven't looked back.
With many online money making systems they teach you how to do one thing. My Online Income Systems gives you many avenues you can take to make the money you need on the internet. If you can read and type you can make money.

I viewed this as my occasion to change things for my family. This was my chance to make money and pay our bills while still enjoying life. I was tired of working to give someone else the life I wanted. The time to go on great vacations and enjoy their family. If you visit my link below you will see it can open the gate to your new future.

November 2, 2008 by Arun Pal Singh
Sometimes after everything you do, your profit revenues do not seem to grow. At that point you must ponder and analyze how to increase profitability of your product.
Profitability can be increased by externally or internally.
External increase: This would mean that you generate higher revenue by increasing the number of sales or raisning the price.
Internal increase: Reduce your expenses in creating and delivering the product.
External Increase
First of all, you need to ask the big question-Is it possible to increase profit by external methods.?
If the answer is yes, next step is to ask if you intend to do it by increasing the number of sales or price raise or both.

Fundamentals of Making Money with Blogs and AdSense!

Google AdSense is certainly the most popular Pay per Click (PPC) program in the company nowadays. By joining your site under the said plans, AdSense will present a sequence of advertisement on your pages. You stand to earn every time a visitor of your clicks on these ads.
They don’t have to buy anything, mind you. They just have to click on the ads and nothing more. These ads are by no means random. They are contextually related, meaning, they are assigned based on their relevancy to the subject of your site.
Could a blog substitute for regular sites when it comes to making capital through AdSense? Yes people, blogs can also be providing an additional income stream through AdSense! In some aspects, a blog is a more efficient tool for this purpose.
There are people online today making six figures per month from Adsense alone. Unbelievable but true!
There are three determinative parts for the winner of a site enrolled under the AdSense plan.
1. The Cost per Click (CPC) that is carried by the ads assigned to your site.
2. The number of page impressions, or simply put, the amount of traffic that passes through your site. If you garner a lot of page imitations, you have a better chance of gaining a lot of clicks.
3. The Click through Rate (CTR), which is the number of clicks your ads get per the number of visitors that visit your pages. The superior you’re CTR, the more you stand to earn.
CPCs are a given. If you’re dead set on a subject for your blog, then you will just be attracting a certain group of ads. But if you wish to make a blog for the primary goal of making money online, then you have to choose the right keywords before everything else.
Basically, your blog will be assigned certain ads based on the keywords prevalent in its entries. There are some keywords that will attract ads that pay high, and there are those that will attract ads that pay low. The trick is in finding the high paying keywords around which you will create your blog.
Here are some tips that will help you find those keywords with relative ease:
* Create an account at. Adwords, of course, is the advertising colleagues of AdSense. When you become a member, you could take a peek at how much the going rates are for certain keywords.
* Visit. This is one of the very few sites that give information about high paying keywords for free. It would rather be kept a secret by those who discovered it, so keep it quiet ;-).
The number of your page impressions really depends on the traffic that you can generate for your blog. Blogs would have an easier time with this because, as we’ve previously discussed in past lessons, search engines love them. But of course, this is not set in stone. If your participants, for example, are also using the blogging policy, then you’re all in equal grip.
Increasing your CTR is an entire subfield in itself! There are a plethora of strategies dedicated for this purpose. We have discussed some of these tactics in my information sheet, as well as my own blog at. These include the choice of ad design, the placement of the ads, and the colors to be used, among other things. I’m telling you, increasing your CTR has become a science of sorts in recent months!
